Implement A Structured Program
Our experience with incentive programs shows that some programs have had a much greater effect than others. It is, therefore, important to identify the distinctive features of the more successful incentive programs.

#1 - Make It Simple!
Some safety incentive programs are not adopted or are even cancelled by management because of practical objections against 'the complexity of the rules and/or the administration' of such a program.
Complexity is, however, not an inherent aspect of incentive programming and it can be easily avoided.
The most successful incentive programs are simple in design and easy to administer. Over the years we have seen a number of incentive programs that seemed unnecessarily complex and difficult to administer. That does not need to be the case!

#2 - Communications is Critical!
Communications within the company, and between drivers and management is critical. Companies where incentive programs have failed stressed repeatedly that they did not have enough communication when they first started their program, which led to difficulties that had to be addressed.
Many incentive programs are cancelled or less effective than they could be due to lack of communication.

#3 - Keep The Safety Message Fresh!
Companies need to find different ways of keeping safety in the minds of drivers through special events, special initiatives, etc. Not all drivers respond the same to incentive programs and ways to reach all drivers must be developed.
